Donald is one of the most powerful mages in Final Fantasy, but Goofy was also able to block a hit from and disarm Terranort, who had just OHKO'd actual keyblade wielders

I’m even less than a casual on this, and I heard “aqua got norded.” I don’t know if that’s right, but here’s my best guess: some water-based character got replaced by that girl from frozen.
🤷♂️
Funny video, though. I like that guy.

Didn't Terranova jump attack the keyblade wielder? Goofy had time to react by then. Not to write off goofy, but I don't think ven had a fair shot when he thought it was terra and got surprised attack
30
u/Jorymo Jan 28 '23
He did also take out Axel

Ven just got out of a ~10 year coma and was jumped. Nobody expected Terranort would attack Ven like that with such speed and vengeance. They were all, pardon the pun, sleeping on him.

I don't know how anyone would follow the games past 2 lmao
9
u/Bruskthetusk Jan 28 '23
Even at the end of 2 I had pretty much lost any idea of wtf was going on with the story, but then I didn't play or watch all the stuff that goes in between the main games so maybe that was my fault??
83
u/Kingshabaz Jan 28 '23
Even with Donald's Zetaflare, I say Goofy is better. He may not scale on a power level, but he doesn't miss an item heal when I need him (and yes, I know and use the Customize settings I ain't no noob).
Also, when Goofy went down in KH2 Mickey about went on a mass-murder spree. Donald goes down in KH3? Mickey gives up and isn't set on sacrificing himself for vengeance. That speaks to me.
15
u/SicknessVoid Jan 28 '23
Mickey does what in Kingdom Hearts???
32
u/Kingshabaz Jan 28 '23 edited Jan 28 '23
He always wore a black cloak (with 1 exception) up until Goofy goes down for the count. Mickey gets fuckin' pissed, throws off the cloak, and leads the good guys into a battle against 1,000 heartless. KH2 is the best in that series, period.
Edit: here is the link. Without context, the conversations make no sense but you get the gist.

Mickey Mouse stopped being a character ages ago. He's just an animate logo, and has been for at least 50 years. Mickey has no characteristics or personality traits beyond "nice." All of the characters around him (except for Minnie) have something to grab onto and potentially even like, but not Mickey.
Mario has the same problem. He's blandly positive and always does what's "right" but he's only permitted to be in situations where what is "right" is completely, stupidly and unrealistically clear. He can't make any sort of judgement call, because to do so, he'd have to have some content to his character.
I hate empty characters like these - and I think most people do by the time they reach adulthood.
Shout out to Sesame Street for having every character (up until Elmo) have quirks, fears, weaknesses, etc. Hiding struggle and self-doubt from children teaches them 1) that they're different for experiencing it, and 2) that when they do experience it, they have to hide it from everyone.
125
u/Randinator9 Jan 28 '23
Bro Elmo has character! He has beef with Rocky!
18
u/Usual-Plankton5948 Jan 29 '23
Whenever I stumble across Elmo vs Rocko clips, I can't help but watch them all.
91
u/pohlarbearpants Jan 28 '23
I actually think Elmo has a decently fleshed out personality. For one thing, he's inquisitive, and for another, he's short tempered.
56
u/testdex Jan 28 '23 edited Jan 29 '23
Elmo is fleshed out compared to Mickey, but not compared to any of the Sesame Street characters that predated him.
He was inserted as sort of a protagonist for young viewers to identify with, but that created a problem where he can't have too much to him, or kids wouldn't be able to see themselves in him anymore.
32
u/Super_Tikiguy Jan 28 '23
The new Mickey Mouse short cartoons on Disney+ are by far the most entertaining thing the characters have ever been in. IMO they are actually quite good and something that the whole family can enjoy together.
5
u/testdex Jan 28 '23
Interesting. The shorts are probably not my jam, but I wonder how much risk they're willing to take in giving him an actual personality.
15
u/SamaelTheAngel Jan 28 '23

I used to find movies like this painful to watch subconsciously as a kid because my mom and dad weren’t as loving and supportive. Now I get to break that generational curse and be a kick ass parent for my son. Thanks Goofy for helping show the way haha!

From one father to another, it took me a while to realize that trying to be better is awesome in and of itself, and the longer you keep it up the better you become. It’s okay to take a compliment about being “better” as long as you remember to stay on your journey to “best”. You sound like you have an awesome mindset for it.
8
u/b1ack1ight Jan 28 '23
Thanks I appreciate that. It is awesome; mentally, physically, emotionally. Compound interest is a hell of a thing. I used to struggle with ego a lot so humility is big for me now.

What's hilarious is that it's just one long extended joke that explains a couple other small details from the show. Like why taking his daughter to the lake was so important the previous episode, and the Goofy hats in Amsterdam. It's such a good "commit to the bit", possibly my favorite episode after Teddy Perkins.

The mouse also kept a dog as a pet, clearly in an attempt to threaten Goofy and keep him and his son in line.
76
u/TrapaholicDixtapes Jan 28 '23
I mean, them having dogs as pets while there are anthropomorphic dogs walking around isn't super weird.
Goofy is to humans as Pluto is to chimpanzees.
(Having a chimp as a pet is super weird but Mickey having a pet dog wouldn't really be the strangest thing in the world of Mickey Mouse and Friends.)
33
u/AttyFireWood Jan 28 '23
Minnie has a pet cat, and then there's Pete who's also a cat.

It was always clear that the humanoid animal characters were supposed to be different than the ones that are just animals. Also Pluto predates Goofy by a couple years so initially there were no anthropomorphic dog character at the time.
9
u/mctoasterson Jan 28 '23
I always thought it was odd that Pluto was a pet dog, completely submissive to and reliant on Mickey, and Goofy is also a dog, but an emancipated dog, and nobody is bothered by this dynamic. Also WTF is Pete? Also a dog?

I love Goofy sm. I was raised by a single mom doing her best, so I really resonate with him and Max. I unfortunately never saw the movie this tweet refers to, but I did see the Christmas specials that featured these two. Goofy goes above and beyond to keep Christmas super special for Max, even staying up all night on the roof, hoping too flag down Santa Claus, and dressing up as Santa to keep the dream alive for Max.
In the other special, when Max is older and finds himself a girl, Goofy is always trying to keep in touch with Max to make sure he’s okay, and he encourages him to bring his new girlfriend over for the holidays. It ends up being your typical doofy “dad, you’re embarrassing me! Don’t show her my baby pictures!!” affair, but you can always see that Goofy loves Max more than anything, and wants nothing more than to see his son happy 💕

5
u/dniMdesreveR Jan 28 '23
Let's not forget that unlike the usual gang from Duckburg, Goofy has had sex.
Mickey and Donald both have nephews and Minnie and Daisy have nieces, Scrooge has a nephew and a niece, Gyro has a nephew, but none of them has any children of their own. Goofy has a nephew as well, but he also has Max, his son.
Goofy has had sex at least once and became a father and boy did he commit to that, becoming probably the best and most loving Disney parent.
I guess PJ is proof Pete had sex as well, but he is not a loving father.
